Q: If the Testo 160 System works well for my institution, can I add more data loggers in the future?
A: Yes! The system is scalable, so you can add or remove data loggers at any time.

Q: Is it possible to hide the data loggers?
A: Testo 160 Data Loggers can easily be camouflaged with paintable snap-on Deco Covers. These covers can be painted or covered with foil skins to keep them from drawing attention.
The external probes are designed to be easily concealed within exhibit cases. The Temperature & Humidity Probe comes with an O-ring mount and cabinet bushing for installing it in the deck of an exhibit case. The protective cage can be unscrewed and painted. Just be sure not to touch the sensor!

Q: Do the data loggers need to be plugged in?
A: Nope. Each Testo 160 Data Logger comes with four AAA batteries for powering the unit. There are a few settings in your Testo account that can be adjusted to conserve battery life, including the measuring cycle, data transfer frequency, and the device's power-saving mode.
An optional External USB Power Supply is available if you’d prefer to plug the unit into a power outlet. When using the external power supply, the batteries will be used only in the event of power loss.

Q: How far can I place an external probe from the data logger?
A: When connecting multiple probe extension cables, the length should not exceed 30 ft. Any longer and you risk compromising the probe's ability to communicate with the data logger.

Setup Help

Q: I am purchasing a large quantity of data loggers. What is the quickest way to configure them?
A. Here are step-by-step instructions from Testo.

  1. Connect the first data logger to your computer via USB cable
  2. The logger will open as a flash drive in File Explorer
  3. Double-click the setup file WiFiConf.pdf
  4. Fill out the connectivity form
  5. Click the SAVE CONFIGURATION button and save the .xml file to your desktop
  6. Go back to the data logger and save the file there as well
  7. Connect and copy the .xml file into each data logger and they will connect to your Testo account.

Q: How do I release the data logger from the wall mounting bracket?
A: A pin key is included with each data logger. It fits into a small hole on the side of the bracket that releases the data logger.
Because the pin key is so small, we recommend choosing a central location and using a small magnet to keep the keys together. Any pin key will release any Testo 160 Data Logger from the wall bracket.

Q: Can I use rechargeable batteries?
A: Using rechargeable batteries is not recommended.

Wi-Fi Considerations

Q: What do I need to know before purchasing the Testo 160 System?
A. We recommend checking in with your IT professionals about what type of network security your institution uses. They may have additional requirements to submit the MAC address of each data logger (listed on the back label of each data logger). The Wi-Fi network should be 2.4 GHz, and each logger location must have sufficient Wi-Fi signal strength.

Q. What type of network security can the Testo 160 System be used with?
A. This system can be set up to work with Wi-Fi networks ranging from open (no password) to WPA2 and high security Enterprise (RADIUS server) networks with downloadable security certificates. Instructions for each network type are available in the Testo 160 User Manual.

Q: Will the Testo 160 System work with 5 GHz AC Wi-Fi?
A. No, this system will only work with 2.4 GHz WiFi networks. There is no need for high speed, as the data loggers use very little bandwidth and send only a couple of hundred bytes at a time.

Q: How far can each data logger be from the Wi-Fi access point?
A. 2.4 GHz WiFi covers distances up to 150 feet indoors. You can check the strength of the WiFi signal at each logger location. There are multiple WiFi analyzer apps you can download to your smartphone to do this. The signal should be at least -60 dBm. Signal strength increases as the number decreases.

Q: The Wi-Fi signal strength at the location of one of the data loggers is too weak. How can I fix that?
A: A Wi-Fi extender can be installed to boost the Wi-Fi signal. Your IT department should be able to assist you.

Troubleshooting

Q: The data logger is connected to my Testo account, but I can’t see any data.
A: Testo 160 Data Loggers require the use of certain ports to communicate with your Testo account. Reach out to your IT department and make sure the following ports are open (feel free to copy & paste this information!):

MQTT protocol ports TCP 1883 and 8883
UDP ports 53 (DNS name resolution) and 123 (NTP time synchronization)

Q: How am I notified if the batteries need to be changed?
A: You can activate low battery notifications at the ALARMS/SYSTEM WARNINGS page inside your Testo account. Notifications can be sent via email or text message.

Q: The batteries are low. How do I change them?
A: Use the pin key to release the logger from the wall bracket. Press the latch and remove the battery cover on the back. Use three AAA alkaline or Energizer Lithium batteries.

Q: I installed a data logger with probes, but my account isn’t showing any sensor data.
A: Each external sensor probe must be plugged into the data logger during configuration so it can be registered to your Testo account. To fix this, you’ll need to deactivate and delete the data logger, then reconfigure the data logger with the external probes connected.
